Acne and rosacea: what is behind it?

Acne and rosacea

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous gland follicles that primarily affects the face, chest, and back. The disease mainly affects teenagers, but many adults also suffer from acne that never heals properly.

Acne is caused by increased sebum production, for example by male hormones and cornification disorders. Bacteria increase the readiness for inflammation, papules (red nodules), and pustules (purulent nodules) can develop. In the meantime, acne can be treated so gently and effectively with modern therapeutics that smooth and healthy skin can almost always be achieved. Dermatological acne treatment initiated in time is the best way to prevent later scarring and thus also to achieve good self-esteem.

Rosacea is a disease of the regions of the face rich in sebaceous glands with redness (widening of veins), inflammatory nodules, pustules, and enlarged sebaceous glands. The treatment is similar to acne therapy and almost always leads to extensive healing, which often requires permanent or repeated therapy.

Rosacea definition: What is behind it?

Rosacea is a skin disease that occurs in the middle of the face: On the nose, forehead, chin, and cheeks the skin reddens and well visible, enlarged veins form. Depending on the severity of rosacea, the skin continues to blossom: pustules (pus-filled pimples) and papules sprout small, thickened nodules.

Rosacea has other names that are now considered outdated or wrong: acne rosacea, acne erythematosus, couperose or facial rosacea. Rosacea is also commonly called copper rose, copper fin, or redfin. Another common spelling is rosacea.

Rosacea occurs relatively often. According to estimates by the German Rosacea Aid (Deutsche Rosazea Hilfe e.V.), about four million German citizens suffer from rosacea in the face. The skin disease often develops in adults between the ages of 30 and 50. Only very rarely do children develop rosacea.

Gender and skin color seem to play a role as risk factors for skin disease rosacea. Women are about three times more likely to suffer from rosacea than men. However, men usually develop rosacea more severely and get skin disease a little later in life. Rosacea is also more common in fair-skinned people than in people with darker skin.

Many people think that rosacea is contagious. But this is not the case because rosacea is not caused by bacteria or viruses. Rather, rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease. Medically, rosacea corresponds to dermatitis (derma = skin, -itis = inflammation).

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that runs in waves. Phases in which the disease is active and clearly visible are followed by symptom-free intervals. Dermatologists also distinguish between different degrees of severity of the disease.

Acne, rosacea, and couperose – the differences

Rosacea usually develops on the face, which can be particularly stressful for sufferers. Initially, the skin reddens and dilated veins form that is easily visible to the naked eye (similar to spider veins on the legs). Exactly these symptoms also occur with the skin disease couperose. Most dermatologists today assume that couperose is an early stage of rosacea. The early-stage (stage 1) is therefore called rosacea and not couperose. The early form of rosacea can get worse and become more severe.

In addition to the reddening of the skin and the large veins, pustules and nodules also form. Then rosacea resembles acne visually. Except for its appearance, however, it has nothing in common with acne. Also, the sebaceous glands and the connective tissue can grow later and the skin thickens (phyme) – especially in men the typical “nodule nose” is formed.

Rosacea: treatment with several strategies

What helps with rosacea? This is the most important question for people with rosacea, who often suffer extremely from their appearance. Doctors use different strategies to improve the appearance of rosacea. It is not yet possible to completely cure rosacea, but treatments with price Mirvaso generic (brimonidine topical 0.33%) can significantly improve the skin’s appearance.

Treatment of rosacea is intended to alleviate the symptoms and the psychological effects of skin disease.
